Mario Kart
Nintendo's kart-racing series where characters from the Mario universe drive go-karts on absurd tracks while throwing weapons at each other — the platonic ideal of the chaotic party game.
Origine
The series began with Super Mario Kart on the SNES in 1992 and has shipped on every Nintendo platform since. The formula: short tracks, power-up items dropped on the road, friendship-ending mechanics. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch, 2017) is the best-selling Switch game ever (~70 million copies). The infamous Blue Shell (formally 'Spiny Shell') is a homing missile that automatically targets the player in first place — designed to give losing players a comeback, hated by everyone who has ever been in first place. The franchise is the most-played 'gateway' game for non-gamers — easy controls, instantly competitive, devastating to relationships.
Folosire modernă
'Blue Shell' as a metaphor for a punishment that hits whoever is winning — used about taxes, antitrust, fortune-killing scandals. 'It's giving Mario Kart' describes any chaotic, item-throwing competitive context. The Rainbow Road track (a precarious neon path through space) is occasional metaphor for any dangerous high-stakes route.
