The Athenian hero who killed the Minotaur — and the namesake of a philosophy puzzle about identity over time.
Origin
Athenian prince who volunteered as one of the tribute youths sent to Crete and killed the Minotaur in its Labyrinth with Ariadne's help. The 'Ship of Theseus' thought experiment — recorded by Plutarch — asks whether the ship he sailed back, gradually rebuilt plank by plank over the centuries, is still the same ship. Modern philosophy uses it to interrogate identity, continuity, and replacement.
Modern usage
The hero himself is mid-tier recognition; the Ship of Theseus is the part most people encounter now — in philosophy classes, identity arguments, and (heavily) in WandaVision, which staged the puzzle directly.
