Origin
Portal (Valve, 2007) is a puzzle game in which a passive-aggressive AI named GLaDOS guides the player through deadly test chambers, promising 'cake and grief counseling' at the end. Hidden behind broken walls, previous test subjects have scrawled warnings โ including 'the cake is a lie,' repeated many times. The game's reveal is that there is no cake, no party, only more tests and an attempt to murder you. Released in 'The Orange Box' bundle alongside Half-Life 2, Portal punched far above its size โ about three hours long, free of advertising, and one of the most-quoted games ever made.
Modern usage
Universal phrase for any unfulfilled promise โ a promotion that never came, a bonus that didn't pay out, a free shipping that turned out conditional. 'The cake is a lie' on a workplace whiteboard is a near-universal gripe. GLaDOS's voice (Ellen McLain) and 'Still Alive' (the credits song by Jonathan Coulton) are the franchise's other most-cited bits.
