Origin
Variants in Plato's *Republic* ('our need will be the real creator'), in Latin (*mater artium necessitas*), and in English by the 17th century. The exact modern English form became standard after appearing in Richard Franck's *Northern Memoirs* (1658). Probably the most-quoted proverb in the history of engineering, agriculture, and wartime improvisation.
Modern usage
Used to explain every wartime invention, every duct-tape repair, every African mobile-money breakthrough, and every constraint-driven startup. The motto of bootstrapped founders, lean-startup books, and any 'we did more with less' postmortem.
