word
Greek
Muse
A source of artistic inspiration — originally one of nine goddesses, now any person or thing that triggers creative work.
Origin
The nine Muses were daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne (Memory), each presiding over a domain — epic poetry, history, astronomy, comedy, tragedy, music, dance, lyric poetry, sacred song. Poets opened their works by invoking them ('Sing, O Muse, of the rage of Achilles…'). The words 'museum' and 'music' both descend from them.
Modern usage
Now most often used in fashion, art criticism, and music journalism for a specific person who inspires an artist — usually a romantic partner, sometimes uncomfortably. 'His muse' is a phrase to handle with some care.
