Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
The Austrian child prodigy who composed his way through 600 works before dying at thirty-five โ and gave English its template for 'genius cut short.'
Origin
Mozart (1756โ1791) was paraded around European courts as a five-year-old keyboard prodigy by his father Leopold. He wrote his first symphony at eight, his first opera at twelve, and went on to produce roughly 600 works โ operas (The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute), symphonies, concertos, the unfinished Requiem. He fell out with his Salzburg employer, freelanced precariously in Vienna, and died at thirty-five from a still-disputed cause. The Amadeus film (1984), partly invented, fixed his image as the giggling genius hounded by the mediocre rival Salieri โ historically thin but culturally permanent.
Modern usage
His name is universal shorthand for child prodigy and for the ceiling of musical composition. 'A young Mozart' is the standard label slapped on any precocious kid in any field. Eine kleine Nachtmusik is hold-music canon. The high-pitched laugh and the powdered wig come straight from Amadeus, not history.
