Minecraft

The voxel-based open-world game where everything is made of one-meter cubes — the best-selling video game of all time and the dominant childhood game of the last decade.

Origin

Created by Markus 'Notch' Persson and released in 2011 by his studio Mojang. The game has no goals, no story, and no win condition; players gather blocks, build structures, and (optionally) survive monsters at night. Microsoft bought Mojang for $2.5 billion in 2014; Notch was paid out, became briefly very online and very offline. The game has sold over 300 million copies — the only one to crack that ceiling. It runs on essentially every device that has ever shipped with a screen, including, by demonstration, a graphing calculator and a pregnancy test. The infamous green Creeper monster (which sneaks up and explodes silently except for a hissing 'Ssss…') is the franchise mascot.

Modern usage

Standard reference for a particular generation's foundational play experience — 'kids who grew up on Minecraft' is a real cohort label. 'Minecraft brain rot' is a common parental complaint. The blocky aesthetic has become a visual style of its own. A 2025 film adaptation made over $950 million and turned 'chicken jockey' into a Gen Alpha meme.
