Michael Jackson
The Gary, Indiana child star who became the biggest pop star on Earth, invented the moonwalk, and ended as the most contested celebrity legacy of his generation.
Origin
Michael Jackson (1958–2009) was a Motown child star at six, broke out solo in his twenties, and released Thriller in 1982 — still the best-selling album of all time. The Thriller, Beat It, and Billie Jean videos rewired MTV around Black artists. He performed the moonwalk publicly for the first time in 1983. The next two decades were a parallel story of musical innovation (Bad, Dangerous, HIStory) and increasingly bizarre public life — the changing face, the Neverland ranch, the 1993 and 2003 child sexual abuse allegations and trials. He died of acute propofol intoxication at fifty in 2009 while preparing a comeback tour. Leaving Neverland (2019) reignited the abuse allegations and divides fans.
Modern usage
The moonwalk is a universal dance reference. The single sequined glove, the white socks, the fedora tilt, and the high yelp are universally recognized. 'MJ eating popcorn' (a Thriller-cinema gif) is one of the most-used reaction memes on the internet. His legacy is the live case study for the question of separating art from artist.
