Used in The Merchant of Venice and Two Gentlemen of Verona, among others. Now the title of a Netflix dating experiment, which has further glued the phrase to the modern lexicon.

Modern usage

Standard cliché. Also invoked sarcastically ('love is blind, apparently') when a friend's partner is a disaster.
