word
Greek
Horoscope
lit. “hour-watcher”
A short astrological forecast — daily, weekly, or annual.
Origin
Hellenistic astrology produced the first horoscopes around the 1st century BCE. The newspaper daily horoscope is a 20th-century invention, often attributed to a 1930 column by R. H. Naylor in the British Sunday Express for Princess Margaret's birth. The format scaled from there.
Modern usage
Most people who skim their daily horoscope don't fully buy it but read it anyway. Online astrology accounts and newsletters have replaced the newspaper column.
