Honesty Is the Best Policy

Telling the truth is the most reliable strategy — the proverb of every civics class.

Origin

Often attributed to Benjamin Franklin, but he was quoting an older sentiment — Edwin Sandys' *Europae Speculum* (1599) already has 'Our grosse conceipts, who think honestie the best policie.' The thought goes back to classical philosophy; Franklin's role through *Poor Richard's Almanack* turned it into an American household line.

Modern usage

The default moral lesson in children's books, courtroom voiceovers, and corporate values posters. Frequently undercut by every other piece of business advice the same poster contains. Quoted at children, witnesses, defendants, cheating spouses, and dishonest auto mechanics.
