phrase
Latin
Ad Infinitum
lit. โto infinityโ
Endlessly, without limit; continuing forever.
Origin
A classical Latin phrase, common in scholastic philosophy and mathematics by the medieval period. The original of 'and so on, forever.'
Modern usage
Used in writing more than speech, both literally (a process that genuinely repeats without end) and rhetorically (something that feels endless). 'Big fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite 'em, and little fleas have lesser fleas, and so ad infinitum' is the canonical English example.
